Glossary of Terms
Terms and their meaning as used at St. Catherine's High School:

AClass: |
An academy focusing on teaching English to foreign students, young and older. Classes are held here at our school in the mornings and afternoons and cater for both individual and group classes. |

Assembly Hall: |
An auditorium, catering for 200 people, located on the ground floor of the school. It is utilised for school activities, parties and meetings with parents as well as for drama lessons. Entrance is from the door at the far right hand side of the school. |

Blog: |
A blog (a contraction of the term "web log") is a type of website and is an ICT (Information and Communication Technology) tool which is being used by our teachers to maintain communication with parents and student. It is regularly updated by the class teachers and has entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video of the students’ activities. |

Blue Room: |
A room within Flutterby Child Care Centre where supervised free play is allowed and it is equipped with toys which are age appropriate, educational and suitable for boys and girls. |

Flutterby: |
The Child Care Centre at St. Catherine's High School. The word was coined following the concept that young children usually pronounce the word ‘butterfly’ by saying ‘flutterby’ initially and this word was chosen thus to reflect our vision that young children need to learn at their own pace and through their own ‘mistakes’. |

Fruit Scheme: |
A national initiative, part-funded by the EU, which will be providing a portion of fruit or vegetables each week to all primary students in schools across Malta. Our School is participating in this scheme due to start at the end of January 2010. |

Jolly Phonics: |
The literacy learning system adopted by our School for the early years teaching and learning of English. The system works on the phonetic sound of letters and introduces children to the world of letters and words in a fun and sound way. |

Junior School: |
The Junior school comprises the years from the Junior 1 (5 year olds) to the Junior 6 (10-11 year olds). It constitutes what is otherwise called the Primary level. |

Pre-Junior School: |
The Pre-Junior level is the transitional class from Flutterby Child Care years (2-3 year olds) and the Junior school. Children should be 4 years old by the end of December of the year of entry into the Pre-Junior class. |

School Terms: |
A school term is comprised usually of a trimester, that is, three months of schooling and usually spans from October to December, January to March and April to June. |

Senior School: |
Senior School is otherwise known as the Secondary school and constitutes the last five years of compulsory schooling in Malta. As such, this sector starts at Senior 1 (following the Junior 6 and also known as Form 1) and runs through to the Senior 5 (also known as Form 5). |

Sports' Houses: |
Classes at School (from the Junior 3 upwards) are divided into our 3 Sports’ Houses - Pandas, Eagles and Dolphins - for which they earn points when they participate in tournaments and win matches or games against other classes. A trophy is given to the House that has earned most points at the end of the year. |

Tracer Report: |
A report commissioned each year by the Education Division which traces the journey of school leavers and their choice of furthering their education or choosing employment. |

Summer School: |
Summer School is organised by the School for children ranging from 2 years (Flutterby) till 6 years of age (Junior 2). It starts in mid-July and has a two week break in August and then continues till the beginning of September. |

Year: |
The scholastic year spans from late September (for the Pre-Junior, Junior and Senior classes) and from the beginning of October (for Flutterby) till the end of June. |

Yellow Room: |
A room in Flutterby which is used for group activities with paint, collages, and the like. |
