not to create students in his/her own image,

The Difference We Make!

Prof Cathy Nutbrown from The University of Sheffield has shared this story of a lady who came to talk to her and related her experience of realising the difference teachers can make with the little things...

"A woman came to see me today...as our meeting was drawing to a close she told me about work she has done recently with a group of excluded fathers and one man, in his thirties....

They were talking about music, and various bands they liked. Most cited popular music... This  man said  'I love classical music me'  and he listed various pieces and composers that he listened to and still listened to.  He talked about his continued finding and enjoyment of classical music.

Asked where his interest came from, he said that when he was three he remembered listening to music when eating snack in his nursery. He said he remembered listening to Vivaldi. I don't know his name...but I know that he attended the nursery, in the heart of a run down council estate, where I was the nursery teacher and I know I played classical music. Tapes recorded at home from my LPs and played on my portable cassette recorder.....including Vivaldi,  while the children sat in little groups of twos and threes eating their snack throughout each morning...

Who knows...did I do a simple thing that made a difference and planted a lifelong joy?  I wish I knew his name.  It makes me tingle. And grateful...to know that those simple things that I did left at least one man with something to last his lifetime.
