School Policy regarding Learning Difficulties in Children:
When it is felt that a child might be experiencing difficulties in the academic sphere, it is the School Policy that the teachers first monitor the situation of the particular child in class and do informal assessments of the child’s progress. At a later stage, if the assessments of the teachers reveal a potential learning difficulty, then the School Management Team is consulted and the parents are called in for a meeting to discuss the situation. If necessary, the child may then be referred to a special needs consultant or a child psychologist for a formal assessment. Subsequently, a meeting is held with the parents, teachers and professionals concerned in order to discuss what special learning provisions may be implemented to support the child’s learning at school and at home. These may include the presence of an LSA (Learning Support Assistant), exam special arrangements (such as the allowance of extra time or the provision of a reader and/or scribe) and suggestions for extra home tuition.
