School Initiatives
Donate €2 in aid of Haiti...
In response to the terrible tragedy that has hit Haiti, the devastation it has brought to the cities, and the despair to the families who have lost dear ones and have nothing and no one to turn to in their helplessness, St. Catherine’s High School took the initiative to act in aid of the Haitian people.
At St. Catherine’s High School we believe that we should act like a family, and join the many organisations which are at the moment mobilising themselves to raise funds in aid of Haiti with the aim of helping to restore some hope in an otherwise hopeless situation. We therefore encouraged all staff and students to contribute €2 each (or more, if they so wished) and the response was impressive.
In fact, our School population showed great solidarity with the Haitian population and so far this generosity resulted in the raising of the substantial amount of €2500. This sum of money was presented by the students to Fr. Eric Cachia SDB on 11th February 2010, during the School Assembly. The donation will be forwarded to the Salesian Community (in Haiti) with the aim that in due time the Salesian Community will start rebuilding the trade schools that would help street kids receive adequate vocational training.

In his speech, Fr. Eric explained how eight of the ten schools run by the Salesians have been totally destroyed by the tragic earthquake of 12th January. In one particular school, the whole school population of 500 students, teachers and Salesian members lost their lives. Fr. Eric said that it is being estimated that it will take at least 10 years for Haiti to stabilize itself from the damage sustained and the contribution made by our School will surely assist in this rebuilding. However, what is more commendable is the effort and solidarity shown by the students and staff in collecting such donation.
St. Catherine’s High School would like to take this opportunity to thank its students, parents and members of staff who contributed so generously to this worthy cause.
