Twinning Project between Junior 2B and Senior 2s

On Tuesday 19th January, the Junior 2B pupils had the opportunity to work with a group of Senior 2s on an art project.  As part of their syllabus, the Senior 2s were drawing flowers from observation using real or plastic flowers.  Meanwhile, Junior 2 students have been exploring plants and trees within their topic of Habitats. Thus, Ms Lee (the School's Art teacher) and I thought it would be an interesting experience for both the older group and the younger one to get together and try to replicate what the Senior 2s were doing in the art room.

The excitement of the little ones could be felt as soon as I entered the classroom on Tuesday morning.  Their first question was "When are we going to draw with the big ones?"  They didn't have to wait for too long as the Senior 2s together with their Art teacher were at our door only a few minutes after the bell for the second lesson rang.  Ms Lee encouraged her students to pair up with a Junior 2 child, asking those who are left-handed to work with a left-handed child, for obvious reasons.  In no time at all, everybody was sitting down and waiting with anticipation for our instructions.  Since we felt that this was the students' activity, the only instructions we gave were for the Senior 2s to explain the skill of drawing flowers from observation with particular focus on details, size and proportions.

The session took about one hour and thirty minutes and I can say that I have rarely seen a group of six-year olds engage on a single activity for such a long time without complaining or losing interest in the activity.  The Senior 2s patiently explained the skill and steps required as the Junior 2s proceeded from having a go at drawing the flowers on a rough piece of paper to copying a larger version of their first attempts onto finer paper.  Once they were happy with their pencil drawing, the Junior 2s took out their boxes of chalk pastels and, after choosing the colours they wanted, the Senior 2s showed them how to use this medium, which was entirely new to the little ones.

The students worked diligently and incessantly to finish their project, colouring in the flower, petals, leaves, stem and background.  The most exciting bit was when the Senior 2s showed their younger partners how to use their fingers to rub the chalk, spread and mix the colours to produce a beautiful effect.

The look of satisfaction and pride was evident on each and every face, including that of us teachers!  It was well worth the time and effort we all put into this activity.  The photos speak for themselves!
